© by SkyPixels.c.za

The Orange-Senqu River Basin Commission (ORASECOM) has started work on the consolidation of a basin-wide Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) plan through Phase 3 of a GIZ support programme. The plan provides a framework for management, development and conservation of water resources in the Orange-Senqu River Basin, serving to advise parties on optimising overall water resource utilisation.

Actual services provided by our staff within the assignment:

The overall objective of the work is to provide a framework for sustainable development and management of the water resources, taking into account the need for improved distribution and equitable allocation of benefits, in order to contribute towards socio-economic benefits of communities within the basin, and ensure future water security for the basin states.

Tasks include updating of current and projected water infrastructure development and demands in each of the basin states in comparison with the development plans of the relevant sectors. The satisfaction of demands is ensured through a combination of optimised management of existing infrastructure planning and the creation of new infrastructure as well as through improved water demand management. Defining the “best” development and management scenarios is done through intensive stakeholder consultation and modelling.
