Munda Dam is a multipurpose project catering for hydropower, irrigation water and flood protection purposes. The objective of the study is to assess the feasibility for constructing a hydropower dam in Munda, Pakistan. Works focus on climate change adaptation and which adaptation measures should be implemented, especially in terms of long-term evolution of flows and rains in the river basin upstream of the dam, integrating the new data of 2010 floods into the hydrological studies, assessing the impact of climate change on extreme floods, and verification of the dimensioning of the spillway and gates of the dam to see if they could withstand more extreme floods than before; Analysis of the management of water resources in the dam in order to address partially conflicting issues (flood protection, hydropower, irrigation); and study of the sedimentation linked to incoming water flows and of the ‘life expectancy’ of the reservoir. Main tasks focus on river basin modelling and climate change impact adaptation in river basin planning.
Actual services provided by our staff within the assignment:
Works focus on climate downscaling, generating synthetic datasets for hydrological modelling under climate change conditions, especially considering long-term evolution of rains and runoff in the river basin upstream of the dam. Works further include integrating the new data of 2010 floods into the hydrological studies, assessing the impact of climate change on extreme floods and verification of the dimensioning of the spillway and gates of the dam to see if they could withstand more extreme floods than before; Analysis of the management of water resources in the dam in order to address partially conflicting issues (flood protection, hydropower, irrigation); and study of the sedimentation linked to incoming water flows and of the ‘life expectancy’ of the reservoir.
