Developing Capacity for Climate Resilient Road Transport Infrastructure

Rwanda’s road vulnerability to climate-change has increased steadily in the last decades. This includes vulnerability to land erosion and landslides as well as flooding, resulting in road damage and service interruptions.

The Rwanda Transport Development Agency (RTDA) is the main institution in Rwanda in charge for building a resilient road infrastructure. The Agency has committed recently to strengthen its adaptive capacity, by integrating climate change aspects into planning and design of road transport infrastructure. The project aims to increase Rwanda’s resilience to the impacts of climate change on the transport infrastructure, while improving standards of road construction, rehabilitation and maintenance.

Actual services provided by our staff within the assignment:

Tasks include: Vulnerability assessment and mapping for the transport sector; Technical assessment and recommendations for road and bridge planning – related to erosion and water management issues; Erosion control assessment; Recommendations regarding technical standards related to flooding and erosion aspects; Assessment and recommendation of adaptation solutions for water management/landslide risk reduction; Capacity building including the delivery of trainings on vulnerability assessment and water management issue.
