Protection of the Niger River: support to monitoring and knowledge of water resources

The overall objective is to support the Directional Nationale de l’Hydraulique (DNH) and the Niger Basin Authority (NBA) in improving knowledge and monitoring of water resources (surface water and groundwater) in the Malian portion of the Niger basin. The assignment is composed of three phases: (i) Diagnosis of the current situation for monitoring water resources and drafting of feasibility studies for improving the monitoring network (surface and groundwater); (ii) Installation and Inception of new monitoring stations and (iii) Operation of monitoring stations and Management of Water Resources.

Actual services provided by our staff within the assignment:

The service focuses on the first and third phases. Activities include:

  • Analysis of river flow measurement network and advise improvements.
  • Diagnosis of existing water uses and recommend additional measurements.
  • Identify the modelling needs of the DNH.
  • Assess the capacity of DNH’s staff in modelling and identify the requirement for training and capacity building.
  • Develop a water allocation model to manage water resources in the Niger basin.
  • Recommend policies and investment for sustainable and integrated management of the Niger basin.
  • Train the DNH in using the model.
