Strengthening Transboundary Cooperation and Integrated Natural Resources Management in the Songwe River Basin (STCINRM-SRB)

The main objective of the project is to assist the two governments of Malawi and Tanzania in the detailed design, procurement and implementation of a flood early warning and forecasting system (FEWS) for the lower Songwe flood plain to reduce the risk to people, property and livestock from flooding and subsequent impacts on health and livelihoods. The Flood Early Warning System shall provide detailed, timely and accurate warnings to inhabitants in the flood prone areas. Furthermore, after the dams being constructed, the system will provide as a means to forecast the floods to guide the dams’ operations.

Actual services provided by our staff within the assignment:

Tasks include:
• Review current status and develop a flood forecasting and warning system for the Songwe River basin;
• Design and implement detailed upgrading/strengthening of hydro-meteorological services;
• Provide support in procurement with preparation of specifications and tender documents for all equipment;
• Support the validation, testing of equipment, and installation; and
• Capacity enhancement of the Songwe River Basin Commission in use of tailor-made services.
